Udyam (MSME) Registration Process in India 2026: Documents, Fees & Benefits

Udyam Registration Process in India

When it comes to an eligible MSME, Udyam Registration is more than a mere formality. It works as a gateway for businesses to get access to government schemes, business deals, funding assistance, and other benefits under the rules of MSME. Still, many entrepreneurs consider the Udyam Registration process as just another online exercise. This may create trouble for them later on in case the information entered is incorrect, or the registration does not match the actual business.

Actax India experiences a lot of cases where businesses make these tiny mistakes in filling out the information, such as investment, turnover, business activity, or other registration information. Therefore, we make sure they learn about the procedures and requirements beforehand.
As of February 28, 2026, around 7.83 crore companies have registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform.

Udyam Registration is the first big step for small businesses. It allows one to operate effectively and easily obtain the necessary MSME registration details online via the Udyam Registration Portal. It makes it possible for eligible companies to go through an online registration process without any effort and without submitting the papers physically.

This blog provides a complete insight into what the registration actually is, who qualifies for it, the process to follow, and the fees involved.

Udyam Registration is the online MSME registration process for eligible enterprises in India. The registration itself is free, and eligible businesses can use their Udyam Registration details when applying for applicable government schemes, credit facilities, procurement opportunities and other MSME-related benefits. The key information to keep ready includes Aadhaar, PAN, applicable GST details, business information, NIC code, and investment and turnover details.

  • Annual revenue
  • Investment in plant and machinery

The government’s help provided to MSMEs is aimed at:

    • Providing jobs, especially in less developed areas.
    • Helping industries without high investment.
    • Reducing import dependency and expanding Indian business in foreign countries.
    • Promoting technological advancement and entrepreneurship.

The registration process is completely online via the official Udyam portal without the need to be present physically at Government offices.
Udyam Registration was introduced in July 2020, replacing the previous Udyog Aadhaar system.

    Actax India Experience Insights

At Actax India, we often see that many business owners think Udyam Registration is just a simple online form. So we recommend that they check and enter the correct information and make sure it matches the business’s PAN, GST records, turnover, investment, and actual business activity. Even a small mistake can cause problems later when applying for MSME benefits or government schemes.

Who is eligible for Udyam Registration?

The following types of businesses may apply:

    • Sole proprietorships
    • Partnership firms
    • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
    • Private limited companies
    • One-person companies
    • Cooperative societies
    • Trusts
    • Any other eligible organizations.

The business must comply with the limits of investment and turnover imposed by government regulations.

What is in the Udyam Certificate?

Udyam Registration Certificate is a document that confirms your registration of a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise. A Udyam certification will provide you with a permanent unique Registration Number (URN) for your business. This number can be used when applying for different government schemes, loans, and credit.

MSME Classification & Criteria in 2026

The MSME classification 2026 has been revised and has been in effect since April 2025. Earlier, the government only considered plant and machinery investment. Now, it has included companies’ annual turnover as a criterion and has revised the limits as well.

MSME Classification 2026: Micro, Small and Medium

    Enterprise Investment Limit Turnover Limit
Micro Up to Rs 2.5 crore Up to Rs 10 crore
Small Up to Rs 2.5 crore Up to Rs 100 crore
Medium Up to Rs 125 crore Up to Rs 500 crore

As reported by the Deccan Herald, these figures are about 2.5 times higher for investment and 2 times higher for turnover than the limits before 2025.

What the 2026 Classification Change Means for Businesses

The revised MSME limits make it especially important for businesses to review both investment and turnover before determining their enterprise category. Businesses should avoid relying only on one financial figure when assessing their classification.

A practical approach is to keep the financial information used for registration consistent with the relevant business records. This can make future applications for schemes, credit, procurement opportunities or other MSME-related benefits easier to support.

Note: Udyam Registration should not be treated as a one-time form-filling exercise. The quality of the information entered at registration matters because the registration details may later be used as part of applications for other business benefits.

Protection Against Delayed Payments for MSMEs

When any company acquires goods or services from a registered Micro or Small enterprise, but fails to pay on time, it is referred to as a delayed payment to MSME under Section 15 of the MSMED Act, 2006.
Normally, the buyer has to make the payment within 45 days from the date when he gets the goods or services unless the contract states an earlier payment date.
Only the suppliers who are registered as Micro or Small enterprises are entitled to get this benefit. Medium enterprises cannot use any of the benefits offered by the delayed payment norms.
As per RBI, the buyer, upon delay in payment, shall be liable to pay compound interest at the rate of 3 times the bank rate.

    Tenders & Government Procurement

Udyam Registration is critical for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) so that they can avail of special privileges in government tenders.
According to the Public Procurement Policy, all Ministries and departments of the Government of India and Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) must procure at least 25% of their annual purchases of goods and services from MSEs.
Out of this 25%, 3% is exclusively allocated for MSEs owned by women entrepreneurs.
MSEs can find and apply for government tenders via GeM (Government e-Marketplace) and various government department tender portals.

What is the relationship between Udyam Registration and GeM?

During the Udyam registration process, it is often required to apply as a seller with MSE on GeM.
It also assists MSEs in using certain benefits while bidding for government contracts, including a waiver of payment of tender fees and the deposit of Earnest Money Deposit (EMD), where applicable.

Reimbursements & Concessions Available to MSMEs

What Types of Reimbursements Can MSMEs Receive?

MSMEs qualify for aid under various government programs. Here are some common categories:

    • Cost of testing and certification
    • Promotion and advertising
    • Support for exports and foreign operations

Government programs exist to assist MSME businesses in paying for product testing and certification. The level of assistance varies with each specific scheme and the certification type involved.
MSME companies can receive funding for trade expos and other forms of promotional activities in marketing.  MSME exporters can get assistance to get access to international markets and promote products

National Small Industries Corporation renders various services in favor of registered MSMEs. Among such support are raw-materials assistance and marketing support, depending on the terms of the program provided.

    Actax India Expert Opinion

Udyam Registration can help businesses with MSME schemes and benefits. But the registration does not automatically guarantee every benefit. Each government scheme, loan facility, or procurement benefit has different eligibility rules. So businesses should check all the requirements before applying for any benefit.

Udyam Registration Benefits: An Important Distinction

Udyam Registration can support access to MSME-related opportunities, but registration should be viewed as an eligibility or identification step, not as an automatic approval for every benefit.

Before applying for a particular scheme, loan, reimbursement, tender or concession, check:

    1. Whether the benefit is available to your enterprise category.
    2. Whether the scheme has additional eligibility conditions.
    3. Whether any sector-specific requirements apply.
    4. Whether separate applications or registrations are required.
    5. Whether the benefit is available to Micro, Small, and/or Medium enterprises.

This distinction helps businesses avoid assuming that an Udyam certificate by itself guarantees a particular subsidy, loan, procurement preference or reimbursement.

What Are Mistakes One Must Avoid While Doing Udyam Registration for Businesses

    • Do the registration through the official website of the government.
    • Choose an appropriate NIC code that suits the business you are running. An incorrect code can create issues while applying for MSME schemes in the future.
    • Enter the accurate and updated amount of investment.
    • Check that the Aadhaar and PAN details provided are appropriate and according to prescribed records.
    • In case of changes in the business details, you are required to update your Udyam details.

    Actax India Expert Insights

At Actax India, we see that the biggest practical mistake businesses make is thinking that getting the Udyam certificate is the end of the process. But we recommend that businesses regularly check that their business category, activity codes, and financial details match their actual business.

    A Practical Pre-Submission Review

A final review should focus on the information most likely to affect the accuracy of the registration:

Business identity: Confirm the business name, PAN and relevant Aadhaar details.

Business activity: Confirm that the selected NIC code accurately represents the actual activity of the enterprise.

Financial information: Review investment and turnover figures before submission rather than entering estimates without checking the underlying records.

Contact and banking information: Verify the details carefully so that the registration information remains useful for future business requirements.

Declaration: Read the declaration before submitting and retain the registration details and certificate after completion.

Udyam Registration in Bangalore: Practical Considerations

For businesses operating in Bangalore, the registration requirements remain based on the applicable Udyam and MSME rules rather than on the city alone. However, local businesses should still make sure that their business identity, address, activity, financial information and supporting records are consistent before completing the registration.

Businesses that operate across multiple activities should pay particular attention to selecting the appropriate NIC code or codes. This is especially relevant where a business provides professional, technology, trading, manufacturing or other services alongside its main activity.

For businesses seeking professional assistance, the most useful support is not simply completing an online form. It is making sure that the information being submitted is appropriate, internally consistent and understood before the registration is completed.

Receiving the Udyam/MSME certificate is just one part of the Udyam registration process.
