Shop & Establishment is a mandatory requirement of any business looking to operate in Bangalore. The registration process is governed by the Karnataka Shops & Commercial Establishment Act, 1961. This act certified or defines a shop & commercial establishment as any premises where any trade, business, or profession is carried out. This can include shops, hotels, restaurants, theatres & other commercial establishment. This act requires any commercial establishment in Bangalore to register itself with the local municipality within 30 days of business commencement.
The Karnataka Shops & Commercial Establishment Act, 1961, and Rules, 1963 (“S & E Laws”) apply to all the shops and commercial establishments in the areas notified by the Government of Karnataka. In, Karnataka, the Shops and Establishment Act registration is mandatory for all shops and commercial establishments except those exempted.
The Government of Karnataka enacted the Act to protect the rights of employees. The Act provides regulations of the payment of wages, terms of services, work hours, rest intervals, overtime work, opening and closing hours, closed days, holidays, leaves, maternity leave and benefits, work conditions, rules for employment of children, records maintenance, etc.

The application needs to be applied online through the eKarmika portal which is the state government’s official website and provides facilities for registration, renewal, etc. under the Act. The application has to be made in Form A along with the necessary documents. This is from the date when your establishment started functioning. There is a prescribed form for this purpose. You also have to pay a certain fee in this case that changes from time to time. If it satisfied the officer in question with your application, your registration certificate under the Act is issued.
