FSSAI – Food Safety & Standards Authority of India was established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to have control over food product manufacturing quality & standards. FSSAI monitors & regulates food businesses in India. As per Section 31(1) & 31(2) of the FSS Act, 2006, every Food Business Operator in the country is required to be licensed/registered under the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Licensing & registration procedures are regulated by Food Safety Standards Regulations, 2011. The Food Licensing & Registration System has been replaced with Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) with effect from 1st June 2020.
This type of registration is for startups, micro-scale food manufacturers, transporters, storage units, retailers, marketers & distributors. Yearly turnover is less than 12 Lakhs.
This license is provided by the state government to businesses with 12 Lakhs to 20 crore turnover a year. They are small, medium businesses deals with manufacturing, transporting, storing etc.,
A license issued by Central government to large businesses with 20 crore+ turnovers. They are usually importers, exporters, operators in airports, seaports, & central government agencies.
Initially, you have to file Form A for FSSAI Registration (Petty Food Manufacturers) or Form B for FSSAI State & Central License (Medium & Large Food Business Operators (FBO))
Attach all the required documents (scanned copy) to the Food Safety Department online through FoSCoS Web Portal. Click here for “Documents Required of FSSAI Registration“.
Your application may be accepted or rejected by the department within 7 days of application.
If accepted – You will receive an FSSAI Registration certificate with the Registration Number & Photo of the applicant.
If Rejected – The department has to inform the applicant in writing.
Food Business Operators might get notice for Inspection before approving your Application for a License, once the inspection is successful, you will receive License from Department & are required to display it in the business location mandatorily.
